Or does she just want to get Spike out of the newsroom and out of her way? The first edition comes out and causes a local uproar, but, at the last minute, chance intervenes to save the day. They had already been done on film, so she was forced to generate new captions on videotape which were then superimposed over the action, on film. This is the reason why the first two episodes carry the infamous yellow title captions. 1:03 ONE EASY LESSON (30/01/89) 1645-1712 ITV ---- --------------- Directed by: Bob Spiers Simon Knowles is the new teacher in school and is having a pretty hard time. This is the dilemma facing the news team when a printer's strike means they will have to produce the following week's edition early, and in only three hours. Will Colin bridge the financial abyss and secure an advertisment with a picture when he doesn't even have the picture? And can a partying Sarah be persuaded back to the office in time? No one wants to stay and excuses abound. As the evening progresses, we learn why Lynda is in a really foul mood, why Tiddler is writing everything down and why Spike has a wok. And Colin? He keeps trying to get to an important meeting with the richest man in town, but oh, the obstacles... (No guest cast) Repeat - 1st: (10/02/91) 1800-1830 Ch4 NOTES: One of the best episodes for developing the characters, "A Night In" came about simply as a way to save money; featuring only the basic set and regular cast, it spared a lot of the budget that could then be channelled into the more expensive later episodes of the season. 1:06 INTERFACE (20/02/89) 1645-1710 ITV ---- --------- Directed by: Bob Spiers Colin has found the ultimate prize-and the "Junior Gazette" news team enters the competition to win a computer, modem and printer. But what about the anonymous television reviews that start appearing at the office? Who is the "mystery writer"? Unfortunately, Lucy proved unavailable to appear. Instead of writing a completely new character, they simply re-named her character in the completed scripts and brought in Gabrielle Anwar, who had originally auditioned for the role of Lynda Day. Basically, the early season two scripts show us the intended character of Julie Craig under a different name. 2:02 PICKING UP THE PIECES (25/01/90) 1640-1710 ITV ---- --------------------- Directed by: Gerry O'Hara Affairs of the heart can be as complicated as a game of chess. David Jefford..............ALEX CROCKETT Gary.........................MARK SAYERS Reporter.................DEAN WILLIAMSON Photographer.................COLIN WYATT Repeat - 1st: (18/07/93) 1830-1900 Ch4 NOTES: Sandra Hastie and Steven Moffat wanted to make this episode something really special, and to this day it remains Moffat's favourite script among all his work. Unfortunately, the rough cut ended up nine minutes too long for the timeslot, so heavy editing was instituted. The full version is still rumoured to exist, and a slightly extended edit also survives. This version contains a few extensions to scene endings, additional cutaway shots and a few extra lines but is otherwise pretty close to the transmitted programme. The episode came about for two reasons: Sandra Hastie and Steven Moffat wanted to cover the drugs issue, and Moffat was sick of the existing newsroom set and was determined to destroy it! DEAD LINE --------- (Unproduced script for ninety-minute television film) Like all the best television series, PRESS GANG has an unknown chapter, an "unfinished symphony" if you like. The idea of a full length film version of was first rumoured in 1991, and an initial film screenplay was written in 1992. Sandra Hastie and Steven Moffat had become frustrated with the limitations imposed by PRESS GANG's afternoon timeslot, not to mention the increasing difficulty they had in getting the controversial series repeatedly renewed, so they planned something more daring and obviously adult. The result was a plan to produce a film for television which would wrap up the series and could even be released to cinemas at a later date. The fourth series was intended to be the last, so DEAD LINE would have been made in 1992 for transmission the following year. Then ITV relented and commissioned a fifth series, with the film pencilled in to shoot back to back; this was scotched by the renewal of ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS, which made Julia Sawalha unavailable for the proposed shooting period, and a further plan to shoot in December 1993 also fell through. Although very little is known about the script, it is apparently set five to ten years on from the series, with the characters still based at the "Junior Gazette", and also features a return appearance by Kenny Phillips, who shares the Assistant Editorship with Julie. DEAD LINE's script pre-dated the writing of "There Are Crocodiles", so the ending to that episode is not resolved, although it is known that Spike and Lynda have broken up (again!) at the start of the film. One of the cast told me that the script also features Spike as a radio DJ, and ends with Lynda driving an articulated lorry over some cars, although neither fact should necessarily be believed! As more time passes, it is becoming increasingly unlikely that DEAD LINE will ever be made, although Sandra Hastie hopes that, should the series be repeated, finance may be found from that company to have exclusive rights on a "new" PRESS GANG. There has been some interest expressed by various parties in this, but as usual, we will have to wait and see. Certainly, the fact the cast are obviously now much older than their characters' ages would not prove a problem given the setting of the film. [Do you know anything more about DEAD LINE? Despite what you may think from reading the above, I have not read the script; I would dearly like to given the opportunity! There are a small number of copies in circulation in private hands, so if you know anything more than has been outlined above please email me so I can add it to this section. Any leads on the script would also be appreciated!] Title Index ----------- 2:06 At Last a Dragon...............(22/02/90) 4:01 Bad News.......................(07/01/92) 2:13 Big Finish?, The...............(12/04/90) 3:01 Big Hello, The.................(07/05/91) 1:09 Both Sides of the Paper........(13/03/89) 2:01 Breakfast at Czar's............(18/01/90) 3:03 Chance is a Fine Thing.........(21/05/91) 4:06 Day Dreams.....................(11/02/92) 1:04 Deadline.......................(06/02/89) 5:04 Food, Love and Insecurity......(07/05/93) 5:02 Friendly Fire..................(23/04/93) 2:09 Friends Like These.............(15/03/90) 2:03 Going Back to Jasper Street....(01/02/90) 5:01 Head and Heart.................(16/04/93) 3:06 Holding On.....................(11/06/91) 1:07 How to Make a Killing..........(27/02/89) 1:08 How to Make a Killing Part Two.(06/03/89) 1:06 Interface......................(20/02/89) 4:05 In the Picture.................(04/02/92) 3:02 Killer on the Line.............(14/05/91) 3:04 Last Word, The.................(28/05/91) 3:05 Last Word Part Two, The........(04/06/91) 2:05 Love and the Junior Gazette....(15/02/90) 4:04 Love and War...................(28/01/92) 1:11 Monday-Tuesday.................(03/04/89) 1:10 Money, Love and Birdseed.......(20/03/89) 1:05 Night In, A....................(13/02/89) 1:03 One Easy Lesson................(30/01/89) 1:01 Page One.......................(16/01/89) 1:02 Photo Finish...................(23/01/89) 2:02 Picking Up The Pieces..........(25/01/90) 5:03 Quarter to Midnight, A.........(30/04/93) 2:10 Rest of My Life, The...........(22/03/90) 2:12 Rock Solid.....................(05/04/90) 4:03 She's Got it Taped.............(21/01/92) 1:12 Shouldn't I Be Taller?.........(10/04/89) 2:07 Something Terrible.............(01/03/90) 2:08 Something Terrible Part Two....(08/03/90) 5:06 There Are Crocodiles...........(21/05/93) 4:02 UnXpected......................(14/01/92) 2:04 Week and Pizza, The............(08/02/90) 5:05 Windfall.......................(14/05/93) 2:11 Yesterday's News...............(29/03/90) Performer Index (Alphabetical Order) ------------------------------------- (Character names listed here are fuller than the on-screen credits) (Characters appearing in dream sequences are counted as actual appearances) ABBEY, Paul (Waiter) [3:01] ADOTI, Rasaak (Police Constable) [3:02] AGOSTINO, Adriano (News Team member) [2:02, 2:03, 2:04, 2:05, 2:11, 2:13] AKERS, Michelle (New Recruit) [1:03] ALEXANDER, John (Second Biker) [5:05] ALLDRIDGE, Colin (Man in Phone Box) [2:10] ALLEN, Janet (Mrs. Liz Phillips) [2:02] ALLEN, Kevin (Bobby Campbell) [4:01] ANDERSON, Casey (News Team member) [2:03, 2:13] ANHOLT, Christien (Clown/Donald Cooper) [3:04, 3:05] ANNIS, Tony (News Team member) [2:02] ANSTEE, Mark (Male Reporter) [3:04] ANWAR, Gabrielle (Sam Black) [2:01 - Guests were Steven Moffat, Sandra Hastie, Dexter Fletcher, Paul Reynolds and Kelda Holmes. Auction items included the clown mask from "The Last Word", the "We Did It" banner from "Breakfast at Czar's" and Lynda's dressing gown from "Money, Love and Birdseed". As well as screening a selection of standard episodes, we were also treated to extended rough cuts of "A Quarter to Midnight" and "There Are Crocodiles". The convention was in aid of the NSPCC, raising 680 pounds for this worthy cause. BOTH SIDES OF THE PAPER 95: Saturday 21st October 1995 Again held at the St. George's Hotel, Liverpool, the second official PRESS GANG convention from the same team lived up to the high expectations set by the first. Sandra Hastie, Steven Moffat, Paul Reynolds and Kelda Holmes returned as guests, joined by Nick Stringer. Auction items included a (smelly) pair of Lynda Day's boots, donated by Julia Sawalha, an extensive collection of stills, and the last remaining copies of draft PRESS GANG scripts. Video screenings again consisted of standard episodes, plus extracts from the original audition footage showing both the established cast's screen tests and some candidates who didn't make it. A clip was shown from a SECAM recording of "There Are Crocodiles" in French; other highlights included an unbroadcast feature behind the scenes on the second season and a reel of out-takes. The event was again in aid of the NSPCC, and although a final figure has yet to be announced, it was thought to have been well in excess of 800 pounds. Information about BOTH SIDES OF THE PAPER is available from the Liverpool Society of Cult Television at 15 Harradon Road, Walton, Liverpool, L9 0HE, UK. Please enclose an SAE. Press Gang Fan Publications: ---------------------------- BREAKFAST AT CZAR'S edited by Stephen O'Brien. The official PRESS GANG fan magazine was launched in early 1994, and four issues have been produced so far, with a fifth promised soon. A well-written and excellently-designed work, this publication has exactly the right balance between serious analysis and humorous comment, capturing perfectly the spirit of PRESS GANG. Featuring contributions from all the top PRESS GANG fan writers, look no further for the definitive magazine on the series. Available direct from the editor, Stephen O'Brien, at Yahoo! Publications, 20 Thirlmere Avenue, Litherland, Liverpool, L21 5HP, UK. THE PRESS GANG PROGRAMME GUIDE edited by Jim Sangster. This is quite simply the most comprehensive reference book you will find on the series, drawing on individual research (including this Guide), production notes, draft scripts, design drawings and many other sources. From the same team as BREAKFAST AT CZAR'S and similarly authorised, it features reference articles, an episode guide, production notes, original "Junior Gazette" pages, a foreword by Sandra Hastie and epitaph by Steven Moffat. Combining the insight and enthusiasm of fan publications with professional production values this book is a must-see for any fan. Priced 4.99 UKP, available from specialist bookshops or Leomac Publishing, 39 The Channel, Wallasey, Merseyside, L45 3NU, UK. Price includes postage. Please make cheques payable to David Waddell (david@waddell.demon.co.uk) ISBN 0 9526955 0 2 THE RAINY DAYS FILE edited by Jason Haigh-Ellery. A collection of fiction stories and humorous features, this magazine fills in many of the gaps by telling us of events never seen in the series. Brilliantly funny, and very adult (so younger readers be warned), this was first available at the 1994 PRESS GANG convention, where it went down a storm. If you want to see what 18-rated PRESS GANG would be like, give this one a try. Copies may still be available. Please contact the editor at 6 St. Michaels Court, Twyford, Berkshire, RG10 9UF, UK to find out! THE JULIA GAZETTE edited by Nik Richardson and Mark Whittingham. This is the officially-authorised Julia Sawalha fanzine. Such publications either tend to be incredibly sad and grubby, or a superb tribute to the featured person's talents. THE JULIA GAZETTE definitely falls into the latter category. Intelligent, literate and hilariously funny, any fan of Julia and her work should look no further for the latest information, comment and humour on all things Sawalha. Two issues are available, with a third due for publication in January 1996. Available from 3 Hawthorn Croft, Lofthouse, Wakefield, West Yorkshire, WF3 3ST, UK. Four issue subscription is 3.40 UKP including postage, or 60 pence individually excluding postage. Please make cheques payable to N. Richardson. THE OFFICIAL LUCY BENJAMIN FANZINE edited by Nicholas Hall. What was I saying about sad and grubby? Although I have never personally seen this magazine, the adjectives "dull", "sad" and "unbelievable" seemed to be being bandied around BOTH SIDES OF THE PAPER rather a lot concerning this publication. If I were to say it comes from the same person behind the infamous JANET ELLIS FANZINE, would that make things any clearer? If you want a glimpse into the tortured psyche of Nicholas Hall, give this one a try. More than six issues are available at 2.50 UKP each, from 12 Alderney Avenue, Parkstone, Poole, Dorset, BH12 4LG, UK. Press Gang Internet Resources: ------------------------------ Note: This is not a complete list; there are many other sites to interest the PRESS GANG fan, but these are the best I have found. THE KALEIDOSCOPE WEB SITE: http://www.serve.com/apetford/kaleidos/kalhp.html This is the site I have developed and maintain for the vintage TV organisation Kaleidoscope, the UK's leading provider of general television festivals and retrospectives. As well as all the latest news on our group's forthcoming events, merchandise and activites, there is an extensive PRESS GANG reference section. This is the place where you can exclusively download or view this and future versions of Press Gang - The Complete Series Guide. I also plan to put all my PRESS GANG articles and reference material on the site at a later date, pending permission from the various publications they appeared in. Information about our group can be obtained from Kaleidoscope, 93 Old Park Road, Dudley, West Midlands, DY1 3NE, UK. Please enclose four SAEs to join our quarterly mailing list. THE PRESS GANG HOME PAGE: http://www.wlv.ac.uk/~cm6051/pressgang Basically a Web version of this Guide, plus a few pictures and basic additional information. Worth a visit despite some errors in the new material. THE JULIA SAWALHA PAGES: http://www.tardis.ed.ac.uk/~ark/julia/ A comprehensive guide to the award-winning star of PRESS GANG, containing pictures, information and a transcript of Julia's chat on the net via CompuServe. THE UNOFFICIAL GABRIELLE ANWAR PAGE: http://www-comp.mpce.mq.edu.au/~aruckhol/Gabrielle.html An excellent, though graphics-intensive, page dedicated to the Hollywood film actress, whose first major career break was a regular role in PRESS GANG. Be warned though: Gabrielle's pre-Hollywood work is not even mentioned; the credits here are still the most extensive list of her work in Britain. COMING SOON: an official Julia Sawalha website! http:// to be announced! This site is the brainchild of long-term PRESS GANG fan Mark Ridley, in collaboration with Nik Richardson and Mark Whittingham of THE JULIA GAZETTE and myself. The agency was founded by DEXTER FLETCHER's mother! * KELDA HOLMES and JULIA SAWALHA have both played the same character, Hannah in SECOND THOUGHTS. KELDA appeared in the BBC Radio 4 version for the first two series and JULIA took over when the LWT television version began in 1991. JULIA also played the role in a later series of the radio version, and reprised it on TV in a sequel series, titled FAITH IN THE FUTURE. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dedicated to the memory of a true Press Gang fan TONIA TIDMAN 1967--1995 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Series Guide version 2.5 written by Adrian E.C.
