Born in Cowes on the Isle of Wight, on 20/10/58, the man with the legendary thumb (which used to be insured for millions) began music life on drums. It is suprising to note that the man who is commonly dubbed the best bassist in the world only took up playing the bass only a short time before Level 42 formed. While recognising his talents, Mark is more modest about his talents, claiming instead to be the most popular as opposed to the best bass player in the world. This is most probably the case. Also how can you tell who the best is? I mean there's no such thing as a bass playerometer is there? Let me know if there is!
As a consequence of his talents, Mark is well respected in the music business and has appeared on various "super groups" - e.g. for the Prince's Trust Concerts or for Midge Ure's supergroup.
Out of music Mark has his own Café, Joe Daflo's near Ryde on the Isle of Wight (named after his three children, Joelly, D'arcy and Florence. So, if you are perchance on the Isle of Wight on your travels take a look at it. No clues will be given as to what group is certain to be in the Juke Box. Take a look at Mike, Gary and Jacko at Mark's café.
Here's Mark King in 1988, and in 1992.
And finally, my favourite picture of Mark in Heaven in my Hands.
